A New Era For Cancer Treatment

One of the areas of greatest development today is the new molecular methods that have been developed in cancer diagnosis and follow-up. Until today, the diagnosis of cancer was based on the fact that the tumor was shown radiologically and diagnosed with the biopsies taken. However, in recent years, the liquid biopsy technique, which provides the isolation of the genetic material secreted from the cancerous cell and the molecular and genetic characterization of this material, is being shown as a trailblazer technique in the future of oncology.

Prof. Dr. Gökhan Demir, Medical Oncology Specialist at Acıbadem Maslak Hospital said that with this technique, cancer can be diagnosed even when it is too small to be shown radiologically in the future. One of the most important difficulties in cancer treatment is the concept of tumor heterogeneity told Prof. Dr. Gökhan Demir and continued; “This is a concept used to describe the genetic molecular changes that develop in the cancerous tissue in the process, to endure cancer resistance to treatments. When clinical oncologists were trying to treat according to the characteristics of biopsy material taken months or years ago, the enemy had already changed their genetic and molecular structure. If the strength of the patient’s repeated biopsies is accounted for, the changes in time in the genetic material of the tumorous cell from the patient’s blood are followed, and the arrangement of treatments according to these properties constitutes another giant step in the oncology.”
