Misconceptions About Sunbathing
Acıbadem Göktürk Medical Center Dermatologist Seher Arı has listed some misconceptions about sunbathing as follows.
- Sun rays are dangerous between 10.00-14.00
False because UVB rays that is responsible for 75-80% of sunburns condense at noon, while UVA, responsible for 20-25% of sunburns, is at the same intensity every hour of a day.
- Face should be protected, arms and legs should be tanned
False because contrary to what is thought, malignant melanoma skin cancers are more common in females especially in the legs and calf region.
- Dark-skinned people do not need protection
Wrong, because people with a dark skin have more melanin pigments in their skin. These pigments protect the skin by creating a barrier against the sun’s rays, but it is not enough.
- Sit in the shade is enough to protect from the sun
Wrong, because to sit in the shade or under a big umbrella without being in direct sunlight is not to block sun rays.
