“Robot” Revolution in Heart Surgery

Anadolu Medical Center Cardiovascular Surgery Department Director Prof. Dr. Haşim Üstünsoy stated that today, 70 percent of cardiac operations are open and 30 percent are performed by robotic surgery. Üstünsoy mentioned the advantages of a robotic surgeon.

“Robotic surgery is much less risky than open surgery when it is made in experienced hands. Most importantly, the risk of infection is reduced to a minimum because robotic surgery removes the human hand and works in a closed area. Also, open heart surgery in 5-7 days of discharge time is reduced to 3-4 days in robotic surgery, in open heart surgery the recovery period of 3-4 months goes down to 10-15 days in robotic surgery.”
